comedy for the day

June 28, 2005 at 3:33 pm (random other things)

This morning, while landisdad was taking a shower, I sent the Bee upstairs to get dressed while I was feeding the Potato his breakfast. After about five minutes, I heard this loud banging coming from her room, so I called up the stairs to see what she was doing. She answered, but I couldn’t hear her because the door was still closed. Now slightly exasperated, I climbed the stairs myself to discover that the Bee had locked herself in the room, and couldn’t unlock the door.

After several minutes of trying to get her to unlock the door herself, I became convinced that there was something wrong with it, and I decided to get a screwdriver and take the doorknob off. I frantically rushed around trying to find one, and figuring out what the Potato was doing (he’s been on a very destructive bent lately–too bad he can’t use a screwdriver yet!). Eventually, I got the doorknob off, and opened the door. The Bee & I talked about it for a little bit, and then I said, “okay, go ahead and get dressed now.” She replied, “okay mommy,” and SWUNG THE DOOR CLOSED. Wait, did I forget to mention that I had only removed the handle, not the inner workings of the doorknob mechanism.

Yep, you guessed it–that was the part that was broken. And now there was no way to open it, since whatever I had done when I removed the handle had set it permanently in the locked position. I ended up having to kick the door until it splintered and that part came loose, to get it to disengage from the doorjamb. What you see in the picture below is the crack that resulted from my foot. I was cursing up a storm while I did it–I’m sure the Bee learned some vocabulary that will stand her in good stead on the elementary school play yard.

And the best part? Was when she complained to me about how she couldn’t close her door now. Kids today!

[...] So the slumber party was a success, despite the ups-and-downs leading to it. There was a Barbie movie (shudder) with 3D glasses, no less. There was insane giggling. There were several balloon fights. There were declarations of best friend status. There was staying up way too late (although not all night, as they were trying to do), and then getting up way too early and eating pancakes for breakfast (thanks Landisdad!). There was (sadly) a moment where the Potato sat outside the Bee’s door, as she held it closed and he sobbed, “be(ing) mean!”. (And yes, the Bee had to hold her door closed, because I still haven’t gotten her a new one.) There was dress-up in abundance. There were goody bags. [...]

Good thing all moms are trained in all the trades and arts…carpentry, karate, psychology…and that we have enough of a sense of humour to laugh about it later!!

Wow! I’m sure that was frustrating (although I admit that I giggled a bit while reading). If I ever get locked in somewhere, I’ll call you!

How funny! And, the other funny thing about it is that I think that that may be a future incident in our new home too! In our new apartment, the bathrooms and the bedrooms have locks to them. I told my DH that he must never, ever mention the locks in front of the kids because if they know that they are there, they are going to start fiddling around with them, and the next thing you know, I’m going to have locked-up kids to have to contend with. DH asked the front office for the skeleton key to the locks, and they gave him some strange gizmo that doesn’t even look like a key that supposedly will open up the doors. I’d better try it out to see if it really works!

Hahaha! Have you thought about a second career in kickboxing? From the looks of that door, I’d say that you might have a promising future in the sport.

I had a similar experience in college when I got locked in a classroom on a weekend with my old orchestra conductor. It took an hour before we were able to get anyone’s attention. In that time, he told me some great stories of his youth as a hot jazz player (who knew?).

D2bH–yes, I’m so glad I have a basic working knowledge of carpentry. It’s definitely going to come in handy when I have to hang a new door, because landisdad? not so much the handyman.

Jess, hey, if I can’t laugh at myself, I can’t blog.
